About the Artist

Eoin Mac Lochlainn began his career as a graphics designer and is now primarily a painter. He also teaches art part time in Port Laoise prison.

He has participated in various exhibitions and shows including solo shows ‘Requiem’ in Kilmainham Gaol in 2005; 'Dearcagh' at the Paul Kane Gallery in 2008; and 'We are where we are' at the Paul Kane Gallery in 2011. Besides the Golden Fleece Award, his prizes include the Keating McLaughlin Award at the RHA Annual Exhibition in 2010.

His series of paintings of Heads began as an emotional response to events in global politics but has developed in various more subtle directions since then. From a formal point of view, he is fascinated by the tension between the actual task of representation and the formal 'pleasure' of mark-making and painting. He likes to create works that from a distance appear purely figurative yet on closer inspection, reveal the true nature of the artist's ongoing struggle with the materiality of paint and surface.
