Golden Fleece Craftspeople showcased in Brussels

From January to June 2013, the Crafts Council of Ireland showcased the best of Ireland's craft and design in the EU's Presidential Suite in the Justus Lipsius Building, Brussels. Golden Fleece artists were well to the fore:

Cereus Bloom 2013 Golden Fleece Award winner Sarah Wiegersma's statuesque Cereus Bloom found itself in a focal position in front of the magnificent stained glass window – a permanent central feature of the presidential foyer – which was designed by Irish artist James Scanlon in the 1990s.
Yarn Red Róisín de Buitléar, with work including this glowing vessel form Yarn - Red.
Leenane Rug Hand weaver Muriel Beckett's Leenane rug, with colours and patterns inspired by her fascination with the ever-changing aspects of Irish land and seascapes.




Sean Lynch and the Sleepwalkers project at the Lane Gallery

Sleepwalkers, an unusual experiment in exhibition production, was conducted at the Hugh Lane Gallery. Over a period of several months a section of the Gallery operated as a meeting hub for six invited artists, including Sean Lynch, to develop and synthesize their overlapping fields of knowledge into a programme of future site specific installations for exhibition in 2012 and 2013. The experiment ran from June 19th 2012 - May 12th 2013.

Paul Mac Cormaic at Toradh Gallery, Ashbourne

Paul Mac Cormaic's solo exhibition On the Road, taking a wry look at life on the road in 21st century Ireland (the long commutes, the effect of bypasses, issues around the environment ...), ran at the Toradh Gallery in Ashbourne between 12th March - 14th April 2013.



Eily O'Connell in Cill Rialaig's Fashion as Art Show

The Fashion as Art Easter 2013 show of work by contemporary Irish designers at Cill Rialaig Arts Centre in Ballinskelligs included jewellery by Golden Fleece 2013 Merit Prize winner Eily O'Connell.

Conor Walton in the Peppercanister Gallery Spring Show

This allegory painting 'Et in Arcadia Ego' by Conor Walton was one element in an exciting selection of modern Irish and British painting and sculpture on view at the Peppercanister Gallery's Spring Exhibition, running from March 1st - 30th 2013.

Clive Bright Exhibition at the Hamilton Gallery

We were pleased to see a solo exhibition of paintings by Clive Bright, Minor Excavations, showing at the Hamilton Gallery in Sligo. This exhibition of new work centred around collected objects unearthed: from the ground, dusty storage, or things that have been in front of the artist all along but have recently sparked thought and dug up an old memory. 7th - 30th March 2013.




"Future Beauty?" Exhibition at the National Craft Gallery

Several Golden Fleece artists were on display in the Crafts Council of Ireland's Future Beauty? exhibition at the National Craft Gallery from January 25th - 18th March 2013. Congratulations to all concerned:

Breath Róisín de Buitléar, with work showing an impressive range of skills, including this powerful piece Breath.
Hogan Joe Hogan, with his sculptural baskets using a variety of willows and other found materials.
John Lee John Lee, with his furniture based on naturally occurring geometric forms, such as this Wave cabinet in fumed oak and figured maple.
ODonovan Nuala O'Donovan, with her ceramic sculptures exploring patterns found in nature and fractal geometry.
Vessel Cóilín Ó Dubhghaill, with his explorations of vessel forms in metal.

Public Art

Geraldine O'Reilly's public art commission for Fade Street

We were delighted to see Geraldine O'Reilly's Weeds are Plants Too! drawings appearing on Dublin City Council's utility boxes in Fade Street, a public art commission launched on the street at the end of January 2013. The adornment of the utility boxes forms part of the Council's Grafton Street Quarter Improvement Project.



Eoin Mac Lochlainn at the Dillon Gallery, Belfast

Eoin Mac Lochlainn's current body of work Home / Didean, examining the human dimension to the economic collapse and how it affects those on the margins of society, went on show at the Dillon Gallery in Culturlann McAdam O Fiaich, Belfast, from 17th January - 28th February 2013.



Conor Walton Solo at the Beaux-Arts in Bath

Conor Walton's latest solo exhibition of still life paintings Elements, focussing on the staples of life, was on show at the Beaux-Arts in Bath from 4th - 23rd February 3013.

Work by him could also be seen at the Peppercanister Gallery's Janus exhibition, running from January 17th - February 16th 2013.

Neues Bauen, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Eamon O'Kane, was showing at Gregory Lind Gallery in San Francisco from 3rd January - 16th February 2013.

Claire Kerr at London Art Fair with Purdy Hicks Gallery

Claire Kerr's deeply evocative miniatures were put on display by Purdy Hicks Gallery at the 25th London Art Fair from January 16th - 20th 2013.
